Index (Financial)

A measure of the performance of financial markets in a region or subsector of a region. For example, the S&P/TSX Composite Index reflects Canada’s largest 300 companies while the S&P/TSX Capped REIT only reflects Canadian real estate income trusts. (The primary indexes for the U.S., Germany, France, Australia, Japan and the UK are, respectively, the Dow Jones, DAX, CAC, ASX, Nikkei, and the FTSE.)
